GOVERNOR PILLEN'S RECORD: A PATTERN OF PRIORITIES THAT FAIL NEBRASKANS

Governor Jim Pillen's actions and rhetoric have raised serious questions about whether he is genuinely governing in the best interests of all Nebraskans or if political ideology and personal alliances are influencing his decisions.

Partnering With Turning Point USA

One of the clearest examples of Pillen's priorities was when he formed a partnership with Turning Point USA (TPUSA). According to reporting by Dan Basso of the Lansing State Journal, TPUSA is a conservative organization aimed at "unite the Church around primary doctrine and to eliminate wokeism from the American pulpit." Its education arm focuses on, in its own words, "RECLAIMING the education of our children, REVIVING virtuous education focused on truth, goodness, and beauty, and RESTORING God as the foundation of education."

By aligning with TPUSA, Pillen has indicated opposition to efforts addressing racial injustice and systemic inequality — issues that go beyond African American civil rights to include LGBTQ+ rights, gender equity, economic inequality, and broader social justice issues. For many Nebraskans, this partnership raises a troubling question: whose interests is he representing?

The Israel Trip and a Telling Moment

Another revealing episode occurred during Pillen's trade mission to Israel. As a self-described devout Christian, he visited the Tomb of Jesus Christ for a private mass—certainly a meaningful moment. However, the more telling moment came at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony when he shared a personal revelation, saying that he felt inspired to do the “God’s work” from that trip. An audience member asked, "Would that be deporting people? Illegally?" Pillen did not respond. Instead, he had the person escorted out. It's worth noting: the Jesus Pillen invokes as a moral guide was not known for turning away tough questions or silencing those who ask them.

"Libtards" and the Language of Division

In January 2026, Pillen made headlines for comments that many found deeply offensive. During a telephone town hall on January 20, he repeatedly used the slur "libtards" when referring to critics and demonstrators. Specifically, he told participants that if they listened to "keyboard warriors that are libtards," they would think "the sky is falling." News coverage and public backlash followed the next day, January 21. The remarks were widely condemned as divisive and unbecoming of a sitting governor.

A $2.5 Million No-Bid Contract Under Investigation

On March 11, 2026, reporter Danielle DaSilva reported that the Lincoln Police Department had taken over an investigation directly linked to Pillen's office. At the center of the case is a $2.5 million no-bid contract awarded to Nebraska Emergency Economic Development. Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley flagged the contract as suspicious, noting it was never opened for competitive bidding. In a January 6 letter, Foley wrote that the selection process appeared to show favoritism. The investigation was originally assigned to the Nebraska State Patrol but was transferred to the Lincoln Police Department due to a conflict of interest, raising the stakes and scrutiny significantly.

Weighing In on U.S. Strikes Against Iran

When the United States conducted military strikes against Iran in late February 2026, Pillen posted a message on social media praising the operation and calling Iran "one of the most notorious and evil terrorist regimes in human history." He urged followers to pray for U.S. troops. His stance aligned with that of other Republican leaders, including Nebraska's congressional delegation. Deb Fischer offered prayers for service members, Adrian Smith argued that peace requires strength, Mike Flood called diplomacy with Iran a repeated failure, and Don Bacon suggested Iran's leadership should ultimately be removed.

Not everyone agreed. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that military action could worsen regional instability and called for a return to diplomacy. While support for U.S. troops is generally bipartisan, the tone and framing of Pillen's remarks showed a willingness to escalate rather than de-escalate.

Reshaping Nebraska's Education System

Pillen has also taken significant steps in education. He has worked to eliminate what he calls "political ideology" from classrooms, specifically targeting Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project, while promoting what he describes as "common-sense Nebraska values" centered on workforce readiness.

He has proposed eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at public colleges and universities, arguing that taxpayers should not fund them. A law he signed in 2026 allows schools to suspend even very young children for violent behavior. He has signed legislation requiring school sports teams to be organized by biological sex, effectively barring transgender girls from competing on girls' teams. Additionally, he has proposed a major restructuring of school funding whereby the state would cover most operating costs for public schools, reducing their dependence on local property taxes. Taken together, his education agenda emphasizes parental control, stricter discipline, and the removal of programs he considers ideologically driven.

The Bigger Picture

Across all these issues—the TPUSA partnership, silencing a crowd member's question, offensive rhetoric, no-bid contract investigation, Iran commentary, and education overhaul—a pattern emerges. Pillen consistently puts political ideology and powerful alliances above the everyday concerns of Nebraska's students, families, and workers.

Nebraskans deserve leaders who are transparent, accountable, and committed to the common good. Regardless of whether voters agree with Pillen's politics, his tenure's controversies raise an important and necessary question: Is this the leadership Nebraska wants and needs?

That answer lies with the public.
